Bessie has been at the Humane Society at Lakewood Ranch for over two years now, and even though staff and volunteers love her dearly, there’s nothing they wish for more than to see Bessie walk out their doors with her new family.

Ever since she arrived at the shelter, Bessie has had to watch potential adopters pass her by as though she has nothing to offer. Yet, the shelter describes her as a 100% certified good girl with a heart of gold that’s equal parts of squishy sweet, and fun-loving.

After two years, Bessie silently wishes for her turn to come. She hopes someone will see past her tough exterior, fall in love with her, and take her home. Beneath it all, she’s a loving and affectionate dog who would bring warmth and love to any home.

While there are no right words to describe how mentally and emotionally exhausting it is to be an overlooked pup at the shelter, there’s one thing that makes these dogs stand out from the rest: their readiness to give their all to the person who finally breaks the pattern and takes a chance on them.

Dogs like Bessie — who represent the nearly 1.1 million dogs that aren’t adopted from shelters every year, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) — are often so appreciative when they find a permanent home because they know what it’s like to desperately long for one.

Bessie desires a home where she will be the center of attention, receive all the belly rubs on demand, and snuggle with her humans to her heart’s content. Oh, she’s also crazy about playtime with toys, so her short checklist of her ideal adopter includes someone who will spoil her with all the amazing toys the pet world has to offer.
